Gender Representation





In this lesson we visited the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square and had to examine representations of the male and female form in art. Once we found our two pieces we then had to discuss and analyse the similarities and differences. The semiotics of the pieces, the class of the individuals in the paintings, their poses, their scenery, their hair, clothes and all the other components that made up the painting. What does say about the person? What does it mean?



Madame Moitessier -  Jean-Auguste-Dominique-Ingres



  • Connotes a classical look due to dress, posture and facial expression
  • She represents wealth
  • Looks like an upper class women
  • Lady Like
  • Nonchalant
  • She has extravagant elegant jewels
  • She looks content with life
  • Probably in one of the rooms in her house
  • Grand mirror behind her

  • Looks like a baker due to his clothes and sack of pretzels behind him
  • Minimal and basic surroundings
  • Lower/working class
  • Clothes are ill-fitting and made of basic functional materials
  • Cigarillo depicts power as he is 'master baker'
