ESSAY RESEARCH.

I wanted to focus on the lifestyle that Mr.Porter promote and how they make the online shopping experience easier and more enjoyable for men .

My essay question is:

How does Mr.Porter promote lifestyle and cater for their target audience?

New Media Analysis:

The website I chose to analyse is Tumblr. Tumblr is a platform that allows you to express yourself and embrace your individuality through your blog. Your blog is completely customisable so you can have it looking anyway you would like it to, as long as you know how to use html codes. The main hub of tumblr is your dashboard. On your dashboard is everything that the people you follow have re-blogged, which you can then also re-blog onto your blog. You don’t just have to re-blog though; you can upload your own things. You have the option to upload some text (as long as you want), you can upload pictures, videos, music, links to website etc. I like Tumblr because the community on the site seem to be more creative and open-minded than the communities on other social networks such as Twitter. Even though on Twitter you can be yourself, people like to judge and mock others for retweets. Tumblr embraces all different types of people and truly does allow you to be yourself. I jumped on the Tumblr bandwagon a little late though. I had always known what it was, and I would have my favourite blogs bookmarked on Safari but I just never wanted to go through the trouble of making one. I also thought that nobody would check it out either. Yes Tumblr is a space for you to just be yourself, but I wanted to know that people were checking my blog out and liked it, just a little confirmation. My friend made my Tumblr for me about a year ago and at first it was tricky because I needed to ‘find myself’ online. I had no idea what to blog, or how I wanted my blog to look like. After a month or two I really got into the swing of things and really got immersed into the world of Tumblr.  To my surprise my blog became popular pretty fast and I get about nearly 2000 visits a day, and now blogging has become a fun thing for me because I know that other people like coming to visit my little space on the internet.

Modern adaption of the Bodycon/Evening Dress

The body con/evening dress has developed into many styles, colours and textures. The dress is worn by women of all difference social status' around the World. These style of dresses allows the woman to be sexy and show off her curves, with still maintaining a level of conservativeness. Here are some images of the dresses.

Club To Catwalk Exhibition

In this lecture we visited the Club To catwalk exhibition at the V&A museum. The exhibition showcases of 85 different outfits from the most experimental young designers, that embodies the 80's club to catwalk culture.

Semiotics

I have never heard of the term 'semiotics' until today's lecture. From what I gathered semiotics are signs, the analogies, metaphors and symbolism in a photo. For example like an ad campaign for Gucci. You would ask yourself questions such as:

  • What message are they trying to portray?
  • Why is the model posing the way she is?
  • What does her clothes connote?
  • What does her surroundings suggest?
  • What type of customer are they targeting?
  • How does this image make you feel?
Azealia Banks, Dazed & Confused Cover

Azealia Banks is an American hip-hop artist. She is known to be controversial and tends to do everything in her power to be different and go against the grain of society. Firstly the background suggests to me that she is in her room, I see what looks to be a bed-frame behind her and a picture of the late rapper Tupac. Who could be her favourite rapper? Her idol? Her pose oozes confidence and self awareness. She is showing us her middle finger, which suggests to me that she doesn't about what you think about her. She is also shown blowing up a condom, which of course is sexual but I find difficulty depicting the meaning behind it. Is she promoting safe sex? Is it just a prop to go alongside her pose?

This Gucci campaign was released when Tom Ford was creative designer. I get the impression that the models are in a hotel room, possibly about to engage in an sexual act. The image is highly sexualised but also switching the power roles of genders. In todays society we only ever see images of women to be in the position of where the man is in the photo. Also the female model has her pubes shaved into G, which obviously stands for Gucci. I get the impression that Gucci wanted to target a more younger sexier market with this risque campaign.

This was an article from The Telegraph which I found helpful as it gave me an insight into Christen Kobke's life. It made me up understand where his love for art came from and also shone light on how he worked and what sort of things he liked to paint. He liked to paint to paint the World through his own eyes, without the influence of past artists.

This website was helpful to me because it gave me some background information on Madame Moitessier. She was the daughter of a civil servant.  Born in 1821 she married the wealthy banker, and one time importer of Cuban cigars,  Sigisbert Moitessier.  He was in his forties whilst she was just twenty-one years of age.  Two years later, her husband spoke to a friend of Ingres and asked him to speak to the artist about painting a portrait of  his new wife, Madame Moitessier.   Ingres refused the commission, as to him,  portraiture was a “low” form of art and he preferred to concentrate on “history paintings”.

Ingres met Madame Moitsessier was immediately struck and captivated by her beauty and agreed to paint her portrait.  Ingres had suggested that Madames daughter was in the portrait, and she originally was. But after her rebelling and not being able to stay still for lengthy periods of times, she got painted over.
Ingres was a perfectionist.  Everything had to be just right with the work and over a period of time the clothes which Madame Montessier wore were changed to suit the artist and be of the latest fashion.  In the finished painting she wears the latest woven floral fabric with a crinoline, the stiffened petticoat, which had just come into fashion in 1855.  The lady also had little choice on what jewellery she should wear.  Ingres was the Master and told her what to wear and couched his suggestions in terms of flattery.

Gender Representation

In this lesson we visited the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square and had to examine representations of the male and female form in art. Once we found our two pieces we then had to discuss and analyse the similarities and differences. The semiotics of the pieces, the class of the individuals in the paintings, their poses, their scenery, their hair, clothes and all the other components that made up the painting. What does say about the person? What does it mean?
